Are you ITIL Foundation Certified..? What’s next? Planning to be an ITIL Expert?
Confused! What to choose from Lifecycle – Capability modules?
Let us help you in choosing the right modules to be an ITIL Expert

Getting the best out of practicing ITSM, starts only when you know you have cleared ITIL Foundation Certification. With excitement of seeing things differently in you work your lesser privileged colleagues hear you speak a new language: ‘service’ and ‘value’ are a part of every sentence you speak; incidents and problems have a new role to play, and you see PDCA ( plan-do-check-act / adjust ) in everything you do…
If you’ve been one of the above, you’ll live in cloud of ITIL Foundation for a few days and weeks, until it descends you to original or you decide I let fervor continue till expert. But choosing the right track on the ITIL modules may put you on backtrack.
So what is the best fit amongst the Lifecycle and Capabilities Module for you?
§      To be an ITIL Expert you will need 22 credits.
§   The Foundation Certificate provides 2 credits and “Managing Across the Lifecycle” provides 5.Both of these courses are mandatory, you need to gain at least 15 credits from the Intermediate courses.
§     Lifecycle module is a Service Manager approach and Capability module is a Practitioner’s approach.
§    Simply put a Lifecycle track is for those managing ITSM implementation and Capability track is for those working in the daily process activities.

Capability Modules: (4 Credits Each)

These are most useful to those who will be taking part in the day to day practical activities described within each of the processes
  •  Service Offerings & Agreements (SOA)
  • Operational Support & Analysis (OSA)
  •   Release, Control & Validation (RCV) and
  •   Planning, Protection and Optimization (PPO)
Lifecycle Modules: (3 Credits Each)

The 5 Lifecycle Certificates mirror the 5 core ITIL manuals. They address the aspects of ITIL from a holistic, lifecycle perspective. These are more suitable to those with managerial responsibility looking at the overall IT Service Management activities.
  • Service Strategy
  • Service Design
  • Service Transition
  • Service Operation
  • Continual Service Improvement
Get the best of both:
You may choose to select your optional modules from just one “stream”. If you do not, then you need to understand where there are areas of content overlap. The following picture highlights the main areas of overlap and indicates where key ITIL processes are covered:  ***Avoid overlapping modules…

Watch Out! When assessing you for the ITIL Expert award the accreditation authority will not accept credits which they consider to be “double counted” (i.e. those marked in RED in the chart above).

Best Combination of modules made easy!
If your requirements are entirely “operational” or entirely “managerial”, choose either the full set from either the Capability or Lifecycle streams accordingly (i.e. Options 1 or 2)

If not, concentrate on deciding which of the Capability courses are most relevant to you. Once you have decided this then use the suggested options to offer a good mix of ITIL topics.
There is a useful “Credit Profiler Tool” on the ITIL Official Site which you can use to explore your options. Remember! Once you have completed the mix of Intermediate modules you will need to take the “Managing Across the Lifecycle” course and exam to become an ITIL Expert.

All the best, in your journey to becoming an ITIL Expert!
